The Biogents BG-Sentinel 2 Mosquito Trap is the result of over 16 years of scientific research and was originally developed to enable researchers to monitor the yellow fever (or dengue) mosquito Aedes aegypti and the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus. The trap can also be used to attract other species of mosquitoes (e.g. Culex spp.), and other biting insects such as midges with the addition of a UV light adapter, or a carbon dioxide upgrade set. An upgrade from the highly popular BG-Sentinel, these traps are used by researchers, healthcare professionals and pest control operators worldwide. The BG-Sentinel Mosquito Traps have been demonstrated in comparative studies to be the most effective mosquito traps on the market. They can be used both to monitor and control mosquito numbers and have been deployed in a wide range of research studies and by private households.

The BG-Sentinel 2 trap works by emulating both human scent and the convection currents that move air around a human body to attract mosquitoes, using a tried and tested chemical lure and a fan to distribute the air. Mosquitoes are then drawn into the trap via a funnel, into a catch bag with the help of the suction caused from the ventilator. The trap is also large enough to incorporate additional attractants (for example animal hairs, worn clothing, small animals, food, light and heat sources) making it a very versatile tool. The air currents produced by the fan and design of the trap are similar to the convection currents produced by a human host, both in their direction, their geometrical structure, and also in their chemical composition, due to the addition of a Biogents mosquito attractant, either the BG-Lure or BG-Sweetscent Mosquito Attractant. 

The Biogents Sweetscent attractant was developed to capture tiger mosquitoes. It consists of a patented combination of non-toxic substances that are specific to human skin. The light, permeable dispenser of the Sweetscent guarantees an optimally timed release of the scent into the surrounding area for up to two months. The improved Sweetscent formula provides improvements like a better protection of the lure against enviromental influence and an improved emission profile. Used in combination with the BG-Lure cartridge, a dispenser that releases a combination of non-toxic substances that are also found on human skin (ammonia, lactic acid, and caproic acid), the BG-Sentinel is especially attractive for the yellow fever (or dengue) mosquito, Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti, the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus and the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus.

In the middle of the gauze cover, air is sucked into the trap through a black catch pipe by an electrical fan, drawing approaching mosquitoes into the catch bag. Unlike in other monitor traps, the catch bag is located above the fan, meaning that the catch can be controlled easily and the captured mosquitoes remain intact and well preserved for analyses. The BG-Sentinel needs a 12V DC energy source to power the fan. The Basic Version of the Sentinel comes with a power cable to run from a 12V battery and the battery will need a capacity of 11Ah for every 24 hours that the trap needs to run. The Full Version comes with a mains power adapter in addition to the battery cable.

A kit is also available to add a UV-light source to the BG-Sentinel for biting midges (Ceratopogonidae) and other species that are attracted to ultraviolet light.

The BG-Sentinel can attract the following mosquitoes without the addition of CO2:

• Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Aedes polynesiensis,

• Culex quinquefasciatus and various other Culex species from the Culex pipiens complex. 

Pop-up design – The all in one, main unit consisting of black fabric and stainless steel wire frame ensures a quick set-up without individual, loose parts.

Cover – The new white plastic cover provides increased stability to the trap, whilst being easier to attach onto the trap and also to clean. Fine holes within the plastic ensure that air is emitted evenly through the top of the trap, to attract mosquitoes. It contains an opening to insert a BG-Lure attractant cartridge.

Funnel with shutter – The new funnel has an integrated shutter that automtically closes if power was to suddenly fail, switching off the ventilator. This ensures the caught mosqitoes would not to escape if this were to occur. Additionally, the shutter can be manually closed and fixed using a simple fixing mechanism, allowing the net bag and attached funnel to be used for transportation and storage of your catch.

Ventilator – The ventilator has a waterproof connector, to increase the longevity of the unit. It can be powered either by connection to a battery or mains supply, and supplies the required suction to draw in the mosquitoes and ensure they do not fly up and escape the trap.

Connectors – The new connectors are waterproof and screwed tight to ensure a tight connection. The quick connect compartment allows trap power to be controlled from outside the trap when the battery is stored inside of the trap body.
